The knowledge of dravya is essential to any practising Vaidya, so we have methodically arranged the herbal garden with over 300 species of plants and incorporated several techniques which help in enhanced understanding of it by the student community.
Herbs and herbomineral preparations form the core of Ayurvedic system of medicine. An Ayurvedic Vaidya can treat with home remedies that are easily available in and around our surroundings.Therefore, knowing them in detail becomes of utmost priority. Along with identification of the plants, preserving and cultivating them is been undertaken by the college trust. Kundapura is an abode to variety of flora, more research about the plants are pursued here for exploring its wide variety of application to tackle lifestyle diseases and impeding infections of these era.
Folklore practice of medicines needs to be documented and worked upon so that they reach the vast majority of people. The Dravyaguna department undertakes work in this regard. Free distribution of plants is encouraged among the general public to preserve knowledge brought down to us by age old traditions. Every year following Vanmahotsava plants are planted in and around the campus and reared accordingly.
Various programs are held to improve the commercial cultivation of medicinal plants and crops that we use daily are also being monitored and studied well for diverse purposes.
The herbal garden of every ayurvedic campus provide us a miniature green library where students can learn about these exhaustively. When cultivated on a large scale it is a ready source of raw material for preparation of ayurvedic medicine.
In this era when we witness a global pandemic maintaing a healthy lifestyle, resorting to ayurvedic remedies which mainly have herbs in it is the need of the hour. So there are plans to extensively improve the herbal garden which will be undertaken in the coming days.
